According to foreign media reports, Oracle, the world’s largest enterprise software company, has been accused of sala
ry discrimination by the U.S. Department of Labor. A new federal document shows that Oracle withholds sala
ries of female and minority employees, resulting in losses of nearly $400 million.
In fact, as early as 2017, the contract compliance office under the U.S. De
partment of Labor filed a lawsuit accusing Oracle of paying white male em
ployees higher wages than other employees. But in order for the U.S. Department of Labor and Oracle to me
diate the dispute, the lawsuit was shelved. Now the U.S. Department of Labor has again claimed that Oracle’s sal
ary-setting and recruitment are discriminatory in principle, and even suspected of destroying evidence.
The U.S. Department of Labor has accused Oracle of discriminating against wo
men and people of color in different ways. These include the initial salary set at
Oracle based on the previous salary of these employees, and the guidance of these employees into the career direction of l
ower salary, and continue to depress the salary of these employees in future work.
The U.S. Department of Labor also said Ora
cle was particularly inclined to recruit new Asian University graduates, saying that about 90% of the 500 gr
aduates it recruited between 2013 and 2016 were Asian. In addition, Oracle prefers to hire people who hold Asian vis
as because they rely on Oracle’s offer of jobs, so they are more likely to accept lower salaries.
